My CT and myself decided the genetics unit falls at the perfect time for me to take over. It gives me the opportunity to see his teaching style before I jump in. The first thing I want to start off with is a KWL chart and have the class work together on what they know and want to know about genetics. Because my teacher doesn't like to give tests I'm going to follow with his style. he does however give "big quizzes" which are worth around 80 points. This to me is a test but it doesn't nerve the students as much as the word test does. I'm excited for genetics because I genuinely love it. I want to start each lesson with a lecture but then go into an activity whether it be individual or group based. My problem right now is finding activities that relate to the content I'm teaching that day.
I found a lot of worksheets online that I can alter to fit the lesson that day. A lot of the worksheets are about punnet squares because I know how many students struggle with those. Most of the lessons are going to focus on powerpoints but I want to find activities to fit in so I'm not lectures for the whole hour and a half. I want to quiz on small parts of the lesson to make sure the students understand it before I move on. The order I've done is most likely to change but these are the topics that I plant to cover. I also need to speak with my CT about how indepth I need to go for some lessons, like pedigrees they're important but how in depth must they go. I want to end the unit with a "lab" on gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting. It's a worksheet that gives you data from G.E, and the students must solve the "crime."
